You often hear about how this spice or that spice is good for you. People tell you that garlic, black pepper, chilis, are good for you. Sometimes these spices actually are good for you, other times there is no evidence that they actually have health benefits. In this particular article, we are going to focus on one spice that is definitely good for you and that is turmeric. Turmeric is not the most common of spices (especially when compared with more common ones like black pepper), but you can still find it in pretty much all grocery stores. There are actually a lot of benefits associated turmeric consumption. In this article, we plan on detailing some of those various benefits.

Everything that you need to know about Turmeric

As we mentioned earlier, turmeric is not the most common of spices, so in this section, we will be giving you a bit of information about turmeric. Turmeric is an Asian spice that is derived from a plant that is very closely related to the plants that we get ginger from. Now, if you know anything about ginger, then that should give you an idea of why turmeric is so beneficial. Ginger is a bit of a miracle plant and it is used in traditional medicine to cure a wide variety of ailments. So, if the turmeric plant is closely related to the plant that gives us ginger, then it is probably pretty good for you.

Part of the turmeric plant is dried and then ground up into powder. That powder is then used to season food. While consuming turmeric as a spice is the most common method for consuming it, you can also get tea that has been brewed using the turmeric plant. Turmeric, much like its close relative ginger, has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. Now, you might be tempted to dismiss turmeric because of this. After all, traditional medicine is not always effective and a healthy amount of skepticism is understandable. But science has backed up many of the claims about turmeric. For example, this wide-ranging study on turmeric’s effectiveness found that it has, among other things, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. So, clearly, those practicing ancient medicine knew what they were doing when they started using turmeric.

The Benefits of Turmeric

Alright, so now that we have covered what turmeric is, we can move onto the main meat of this article, which is discussing the various health benefits of turmeric.

It has anti-inflammatory properties

Turmeric is a very powerful anti-inflammatory. What this means is that it helps prevent and relieve swelling. The reason for this is turmeric has curcuminoids in them. You probably have never heard of these before and that is alright because 99% of the population has not heard of them either. Curcuminoids are small organic compounds found in turmeric that carry numerous benefits with them. One of those benefits is anti-inflammatory properties. As you can see from this study, science has confirmed that turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties. The study also confirms that turmeric is not toxic, even in particularly large amounts. Because turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties, it is useful wherever swelling can be an issue. For example, people with swollen joints (which is one of the major symptoms of arthritis) could benefit from using turmeric to help relieve the swelling around their joints.

A note of caution, however, while turmeric does have anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric on its own is probably not powerful enough to reduce swelling entirely. But, it could be very useful when combined with other anti-inflammatory drugs. But this also depends on the level of swelling. Turmeric alone could potentially deal with minor swelling on its own, without the aid of other anti-inflammatory drugs.

It has antioxidants

If you read about different kinds of health foods like blueberries, green tea, etc., then you will see that a lot of them contain antioxidants. Turmeric is no exception to this rule. Turmeric is full of antioxidants. Now, if you are sitting there and scratching your head wondering what antioxidants are, then do not worry because we are going to explain why antioxidants are so valuable. See, your body gets infested with chemicals that are known as “free radicals.” Free radicals can be both natural and unnatural. Your body produces free radicals on its own, but they can also enter your body from outside sources. These free radicals are dangerous, to say the least. They can cause damage to your body and they can result in numerous disease, including cancer. What antioxidants do is essentially cleanse your body of these free radicals. Much like with its anti-inflammatory properties, the fact that turmeric has antioxidants in it is backed up by science. As you can see from this study, which confirms that turmeric is both an anti-inflammatory and full of antioxidants.

It can reduce the risk of heart disease

You are probably not familiar with the term “endothelial function,” but it is critically important for your heart’s health. Essentially, what the term refers to is how the inner lining of your blood vessels work. People who suffer from what is called “endothelial dysfunction” are at a greater risk of developing heart disease. So, why is all of this information relevant to turmeric? Well, turmeric can actually help improve your endothelial function, which then decreases your chances of developing heart disease. As you can see from this study, a mixture of exercise and turmeric consumption improved the endothelial function of several middle-aged women. Likewise, because turmeric can help reduce inflammation, it can also be helpful in maintain a healthy circulatory system. Another interesting study shows that turmeric can actually reduce the chances of suffering from a heart attack.

It can help keep your brain healthy

One of the most surprising benefits of turmeric is that it can potentially prevent your brain from degrading. That’s right, turmeric could actually improve your brain function. See, in your brain, there is a hormone that is called “brain-derived neurotrophic factor.” This hormone, often called “BDNF” for short, is responsible for helping your brain to function properly. A lot of debilitating brain disorders, like Alzheimer’s disease, have been linked to a decrease in this hormone. Turmeric seems to actually be able to increase the amount BDNF in your body. While more studies are going to be needed to confirm that turmeric truly helps your brain remain healthy, early results seem promising.

It can act as an antidepressant

One final benefit we want to mention is that turmeric can actually act as an antidepressant. Studies have shown that turmeric can have influences on the brain in positive ways and one of those ways is by acting as an antidepressant. As you can see from this study, testing on rats has shown that turmeric can actually act as an effective antidepressant. As you can see from the study, the reason for this traces back to the fact that turmeric can help increase the levels of BDNF in your body.

Conclusion

So, as you can see from this list, turmeric is a powerful spice and you should try and incorporate more of it into your diet. There are of course other benefits that could be mentioned, but by now you probably have a good idea of beneficial turmeric is.
